BMO 3D by superjitan BMO 3D by superjitan
( Check me out on tumblr! ajmatthewman.com/ )

EDIT: entering this into the fan art category of the 3Differences contest

It's BMO! In 3D!

Made in Maya 2013, comped in photoshop.

I've been tinkering with this idea for probably about a year now and never really got the renders to look quite right. At first I went for a 'realistic' style and tried to make her look like a real gameboy, but that required textures which i wasnt that comfortable with at the time (i know a lot more about it now). I reopened the file recently and went with a completely different style. It's really easy too! I put a surface shader on everything to get the colours and then made another render layer and rendered out an ambient occlusion. I had it set up with two big area lights before that were casting nice soft shadows, but it started to take longer and longer to render just test shots. Doing it this way with the AO just works better for me. I'm sure theres probably a way I could render both the colour and the AO at the same time, but I find it much easier to get my head around rendering out two seperate images and sticking them together in photoshop. I also put a gradient over the top for a little hipstery instagram look.

Let me know what you think and if you think I should make something else in 3D!

I also want to ask: what's the difference between 3ds max and Maya?

not a lot. they're both made by the same people. personally i find 3DS max very confusing and lame but thats most likeyl just because im so used to Maya. some studios like 3DS, some like maya. *shrug* theres especially no difference in the end results because they both use the same plugin to render stuff

and thanks a lot by the way! :D

No problem! :la:

I use 3DS max and I think it's pretty good.  Some of friends don't like it though, but I guess it's people's choice after all :)   I would love to try Maya one day.

i really dont know that theres any difference in terms of results, so if you know 3DS max then you might as well stick with it. i know maya has a bunch of dynamics stuff, like particles and cloth and fluid simulations, 3DS might have some too but ive never used them. the only real advantage of learning both is that you might find a job or something that specifically uses one or the other.
